Thanks to the support of a great teacher, colleague and friend I started working both in research and as teacher assistant on General Linguistics during my third year in the programme. I soon discovered that research was my passion and back then teaching didn't actually sound that appealing to me.
However, in a few months I realized I had found what a really enjoyed: Linguistics, or the scientific study of language if you prefer so. Thus, a BA on English Linguistics and Literature sounded fine to me (though I had absolutely no idea what I was getting into). After all, I enjoyed learning different languages, reading and writing. I had no motivation at all to study and programming was not as interesting as I had imagined.Īfter a long gap year of laziness I had to study again, and this time I chose to study something related to languages. It only took me a couple of months to realise that I had made a mistake. So I decided to study computer engineering. But these childish dreams soon faded away, as they usually do.Īs I finished highschool I had no real passion for anything, so I chose the one thing I kind of liked: computers. Then, being a detective seemed like a good idea to me (I wasn't completely sure what detectives did back then). I recall I liked animals, so of course I wanted to be a vet at some point in life. I remember I had different ideas as I was growing up. Being completely honest, I was never entirely sure what I wanted to become when I was a child.
